Muscle Pain

A strain is caused when a muscle is stretched or torn and a sprain occurs when a ligament is stretched or twisted. These injuries most often occur as a result of sports or other physical activities. A sprain is a more severe version of a strain.

Symptoms

  • You may experience pain and inflammation of the affected area, possibly with loss of movement

How can I manage a strain or sprain?

Over-the-counter painkillers and heat pads can help. Short-term relief can also be achieved using the approach known as RICE. Rest the joint to prevent further injury, apply an ice pack for 15 minutes, compress the joint using an elasticated wrap and elevate the joint.
